About
Izzie Kemp Design is a knitwear brand that produces good quality, long lasting pieces of homewares and accessories. Everything is made of 100% lambswool knitted by myself on a hand powered standard gauge knitting machine.
I was Initially drawn to knitwear during my Fashion Design and Textile degree back in the early 2000's, but instead choose to study Footwear design, and soon after went on to work in the shoe industry as a designer.
Some of my designs at this time were mass produced in China and sold world wide. This overview of mass production has lead me to question the fast fashion/ throw away culture that the commercial world offers.
I have become much more conscious of supporting brands that have clear ethical values that consider practicality and durability.
In 2015 I attended a machine knitting course where I learnt the basics; I later became a freelance knitter for some small independent designers where I continued to learn new techniques.
In 2021 I created a small range of cushion covers. Each cushion design is realised directly on to the machine as I tend to just run with an initial idea, tweak along the way and embrace the spontaneity of the moment. This style of practice doesn't allow me to overthink the design.
I like that I have created some interesting and unusual shapes, and colour combinations spontaneously. Afterwards I often see a story or pattern emerging.
I love to experiment with colours. I often find that I have been influenced by landscapes and coastlines. Sometimes even by man made structures. The finished product usually is of an abstract design.
